File # 2023-11439

RCMP in Campbell River have arrested one individual who barricaded himself, threatening to harm police.

On the afternoon of August 9, 2023 Campbell River RCMP responded to a disturbance at a condo complex situated in the 2000 block of the Island Highway. It was determined that the suspect, a 37-year-old man, had been causing a disturbance throughout the day, prompting calls to police.

Upon police arrival, officers tried to communicate with the suspect but were encountered with resistance when the alleged to be armed and wanting to kill police and eventually barricaded himself. Due to the potential high risk nature of the incident, the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team was mobilized to assist as attempts to de-escalate the situation were not successful.

A judicial authorization was obtained to enter the residence and police eventually were able to take the suspect into custody without any injuries occurring, says Inspector Jeff Preston, officer in charge of the Campbell River RCMP.

The suspect has been held for court on August 10, 2023. Investigators will be forwarding a detailed report to Crown counsel for recommendation of criminal charges.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221.
