Fatal avalanche in the backcountry

On April 15th, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were called to a report of an avalanche near Thunderwater Lake, northwest of Invermere, BC. One person was believed to have been buried.

Search and Rescue crews arrived in the area with a helicopter.

A 36-year-old man was found deceased as a result of the avalanche, and was transported to Invermere, BC. The man was snowmobiling with a group of two other snowmobilers, who were both found safe.

The Columbia Valley RCMP continues to assist the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.
