Port Alberni RCMP members participated in a canoe journey on the morning of May 24th 2023 with students from ADSS, Eighth Avenue Learning Centre, USMA, and Tseshaht First Nation.

Two USMA canoes were skippered by USMA volunteers; a Tseshaht canoe was skippered by a Tseshaht community member with many former Haahuupayak Elementary School students and ADSS staff. Canoes departed Clutesi Haven Marina, paddling to Canal Beach and back again under pristine weather conditions.

This was a great opportunity for us to experience Nuu-chah-nulth canoe culture alongside youth - and a heck of a workout too!, says Youth Liaison Officer - Cst. Anna Chubukova.

Eighth Avenue Learning Centre is working with USMA to ensure children in care in the SD70 school district have the opportunity to paddle and to learn Nuu-Chah-Nulth canoe culture and protocols starting in the next school year.

RCMP members at Port Alberni detachment participate in local activities such as these in order to build and maintain relationships, creating an environment that fosters tradition, equality and trust.
